CTO Colloquium

This is a unique event that 7CTOs hosts around the world. An opportunity for CTOs to gather and discuss important topics.

The 9th CTO Colloquium: Austin 9/19/19

By CTO Colloquium, Events

On 9/19/2019, in Austin TX, technology leaders led a discussion among peers with presentations on:

How to build fully functioning MVPs like RoomSteals.com in days

How to get a group of people to agree on priorities without saying a word

Better marketing, better products: How to integrate marketing into your tech stack

On How to build fully functioning MVPs like RoomSteals.com in days: We’ve all heard of customer development. However, building the product can sometimes be the fastest way to learn about the market you’re interested in. I’m going to share my mental models, optimized for speed, as well as how I build new products like RoomSteals.com in a weekend.

On How to get a group of people to agree on priorities without saying a word: There are huge advantages to group decision making compared to letting one individual making all the decisions. While many of us have experienced this phenomenon, we rarely have the time or patience to facilitate this type of activity. In reality, we avoid minimize using large groups to make decisions because it is time consuming to get alignment and we know that an influential subset of people can steer the group, or worse it feels like the group can talk itself in circles without reaching an actionable conclusion. During this discussion, I will describe a technique for helping a group of people utilize their combined knowledge to align on priorities, and most of it is done without speaking.

On Better marketing, better products: We’re going to talk about the marketing, tracking, and personalization. Giving some thought to your marketing funnel and integrating customer lifecycle events into your SaaS product will allow you complement your marketing tech stack, not fight it.

What is the CTO Colloquium?

The CTO Colloquium is a series of meetings held in various cities, at which specialists address Chief Technology Officers in presentations on relevant topics.  Afterwards, they answer questions pertaining to these topics as well as take part in discussions with  smaller groups of attendees.

Who is it for?

The meetings are exclusive to the head of all technology in a company, typically the CTO.  We prefer to keep the meetings small in order to maximize engagement with the presenters and therefor we keep it invite-only.

Please contact us if you’re interested in attending a future Colloquium. Just a heads up that these are invite-only events, but we are always interested in meeting new people.

The 8th CTO Colloquium: Carlsbad 9/10/19

By CTO Colloquium, Events

On 9/10/2019, in Carlsbad, CA, in partnership with Proven Recruiting, 7CTOs presented:

Tackling Scalability & Microservices – A Case Study

Led by technology leaders and fellow 7CTOs members Anup Marwadi and Benji Koltai.

Scaling systems requires out-of-the-box thinking. Many of the traditional rules of programming do not apply when it comes to building systems that scale.

Over the past 5 years, Anup has built distributed systems that need to scale up to perform thousands of transactions a second. In this open forum, we would like to focus some of the techniques that were applied to achieve scale and also chat about how so many of these techniques are now being replaced by micro-services oriented serverless architectures such as Lambda functions.

Bring your questions and be ready to contribute. The goal of this discussion is to setup a forum to exchange ideas and discuss pros and cons of some of the approaches used

By CTO Colloquium, Events

In collaboration with Thinkific and Vancouver CTO Group, on 5/8/2019, in Vancouver, BC, 7CTOs presented:

“Managing Growth through Transparency & Communication”
“I was an early-stage startup CTO”
“Building and maintaining a good company culture”

On Managing Growth through Transparency & Communication: An actionable overview of techniques used to manage effectively at times of change and growth in a startup environment. Strategies to implement in bringing your team closer together when you as a CTO are getting stretched and have less and less time to spend in the trenches alongside your engineers.

On I was an early-stage startup CTO: A talk about the journey building the engineering practice at Thinkific. This talk will include descriptions of the technical, people and process challenges encountered and the lessons learned as a result.

On Building and maintaining a good company culture: Leaders need to build great working environments for their employees, in order to attract and retain the best people. I want to share some of the keys to our success at WineDirect.
